As you climb up and descend Togwotee Pass (pronounced Tow-go-tee), you can explore several roadside pullouts to stop and enjoy the spectacular views.

Passing the "Continental Divide," you enter Bridger-Teton National Forest, leading to the entrance of Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone National Parks.

Frequently there are moose, bears, deer, or even heads of Bison that sometimes block the road for an exciting experience. Elk are common in Yellowstone in the Summer and can be seen outside of the town of Jackson in the fall & winter months as they migrate to their wintering habitat.

East to Dubois

Just 20 miles away is Dubois, nestled between the Absaroka, Wind River, and Owl Creek Mountain Range.

Along the way, you'll encounter the Tie Hack Memorial, Historical Markers, and Union Pass, each with its own rich history. Dubois provides access to the tallest peak in Wyoming through its trailhead.

Nearby, Jakey's Fork, was frequented by Butch Cassidy, and offers walkable trails to ancient Petroglyphs on cliff faces. Drawn thousands of years ago by the indigenous Mountain Shoshone peoples, they still ignite curiosity about their meanings and provide a fun afternoon adventure.

WHILE ON THE RANCH

If you would like to decompress, relax reading a book, meander through the meadow & timber down to the river bank, photograph the many scenic areas, or even hike into the national forest, it’s available for you to choose. Nighttime stargazing, or build a bonfire and watch the flames leap and ebb. Bring some marshmallows & cut a willow branch to hold them over the fire. Your children may cuddle up in your lap and watch the fire as they wind down their day and then collapse into bed. Winter snowmobiling or perhaps cross skiing can start from your cabin door. Elk, deer , moose can wander through, & in early morning, coyote’s may howl. Eagles & hawks are home in these mountains which captivate as you watch them soar. From the ranch you can drive to lake or stream fishing, local horseback riding is available as well as four wheel & UTV rentals for backcountry adventure.

WEST OF US

With the Double Bar J located along Wyoming’s Centennial Scenic Byway, traveling West or East brings beautiful landscapes and many places of interest to explore within an easy days outing. For a more adventurous backcountry experience the ease of getting to the wild is considered by Camel Trophy Champion, Tim Hensley, the best in the lower 48 States. Tim and Land Rover of North America spent time at the ranch as they hosted a “Dealership” introduction of one of their off roading vehicles. They did not leave disappointed! Behind the ranch you can travel on Forest Service road 540 to Pelham Lake trailhead and hike a short distance to the lake. West of the ranch and along Hwy 26 you can visit Brooks Lake Falls less than a 15 minute drive, or Brooks Lake 30 minutes away on forest road 515. Continuing on another few miles on Hwy 26, you will find Wind River Lake just a few hundred feet from the road. As you cross the “Continental Divide” at Togwotee pass (pronounced Tow-go-tee), you start what will be almost a 2,800 foot descent onto the floor of Jackson Hole in a space of approximately 16 miles. Along this section of the Scenic Byway there are several roadside pullouts where you can stop and enjoy the spectacular views of the Tetons. You’ve left the Shoshone National Forest and entered Bridger-Teton National Forest with the Forest Service “Black Rock” ranger station just at the base of your descent. Approximately 8 miles from the ranger station is “Moran Junction” which is the South Entrance to Grand Teton Park and the road to Yellowstone National Park. Passing Moran Junction entrance to the parks, the town of Jackson is approximately 30 miles along the valley floor. Frequently in the Summer are heads of Bison that sometime block the road for an exciting experience. Although many tourists leave their vehicle, Bison are dangerous and should be given a wide berth. Elk are common in Yellowstone in the Summer and can be seen outside of the town of Jackson in the fall & winter months as they “herd up” in their natural wintering ground. River rafting trips of either “white water” or scenic trips can be arranged out of Jackson.

EAST OF US

East of the ranch a first stop is the “Tie Hack Memorial” just two miles on Hwy 26. Dedicated to loggers who supplied unknown thousands of railroad “Ties” for the rail industry their history is honored on a carved stone monolith with a short history of their time in these mountains. Another eight miles brings you to Union Pass road and locally known as Dunor Station. A historical marker sits at the roads junction commemorating the 1859-1860 expedition of U.S. Army cartographer’s mapping expedition of the mountain region. The local town of Dubois (pronounced Dew-boys) is the closest for shopping & dining. Summertime weekly square dances are popular with locals and guests as well as the Friday night rodeo. The Fourth of July is highlighted with an afternoon parade and evening fireworks that brings crowds from distant areas to view and enjoy! The annual Buffalo Bar-B-Que, a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department, is looked forward to every year. East of town is a private ranch on Jakey’s Fork which once was defended by the infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy. He would frequent the area and apparently never had any trouble with the law while here. The road that leads to Jakey’s Fork, splits to the left (Forest road 411) with several miles of dirt road and an eventual end at Glacier trailhead. Along the way you will pass Torrey and Ring Lake with steep cliffs on the right. Walkable trails up the cliffs will lead to ancient Petroglyphs that are sprinkled on the rock face. The hunt for these rock carvings is an afternoon of fun and brings on wonderment as to their meanings! The trailhead at the end is for horseback riders or hearty hikers that can venture up to Whiskey mountain. Further East on Hwy 26, is the National Museum of Military Vehicles. A world class museum not to be missed while in the area.
